Day Drinking Guide for San Antonio

Now that we’ve reached peak adulthood (meaning we’re real adults) day drinking is probably listed as one of the hobbies we partake in. I list is along with reading French + Russian Literature (I have a degree in English but my thesis was on Nabokov + Camus [granted both can be argued that they’re really not Russian/ French but that’s beside the point]), laying around and really thinking about song lyrics and day drinking as my hobbies on bumble. If it’s there it’s real facts.

So I recently sat down with ½ of Sip_SA to come up with our list of the best places to day drink. Really academic, undisputed, tried, true and tested- that being said if new places arise or we get new places we’ll add them little by little! Eastside

Drinking on the up and coming Eastside of San Antonio is going to be one of your best bets to low-key day drinking experience. Most of these places tend to have a more laid back base and will allow you to chill with your friends and focus on bonding. Places like Burleson and Alamo Beer host events sometimes so keep that in mind also while the vibe is chill, they can get pretty happening especially in the early evening.

Downtown and River Walk

Drinking downtown and on the River Walk is a different animal, with the spread out area comes different scenes. You have the chance of sharing the space with regulars and locals that live downtown or with tourists that are just here temporarily. So the atmosphere might be a little different depending on the day you do go. There’s also a mix of dive bars like Sanchos and classier environments like Ocho and the Rooftop at the Fairmount downtown. Either way, let it be known that down on the River Walk it’s open container and you’re allowed to walk around and drink- just don’t fall in the river.

The Historic Pearl and St. Mary’s Strip

Someone told me that this side of town was a breeding ground for useless people (don’t believe me look here). That statement is entirely false. Maybe he got sad no one would be his friend and invite him to day drink. Drinking at the Historic Pearl is gonna be full of the cool kids, the ones taking photos and the ones that are there because that’s the easiest place to make someone in the group happy. Now drinking on the St. Mary’s Strip is gonna be where all the action happens. It’s a street full of art, music and well booze. So bottoms up, y’all.

Northeast Side

The Northeast side is a place most people don’t really go to due largely to traffic. 281 is still under some kind of mess but it’ll be fixed soon. Granted some of these places are a lot closer to town than you think, I’m still classifying them as the northeast. Also you’ll notice this side of town usually hosts people who literally use happy hour to avoid traffic or meet even more people. I would describe the drinking vibe of northeast San Antonio as laid back but still making face.

Northwest Side

Now drinking on the Northwest side of San Antonio is a whole ‘nother side, it’s a lot of drinking for the ‘gram. A lot of northsiders (I’m one of those) are typically gonna be college crowd or parents who got a babysitter and are finally free to go out. Nothing wrong with that but just know that’s who you’re going to encounter should you choose to drink up there. Also you’ll find some of the cheapest prices bars like The Rustic and the General Public both have happy hours that correspond with the time- so $3 at 3pm, $4 at 4pm and $5 at 5pm. The atmosphere is still gonna be pretty keep to yourself but occasionally you’ll be able to break that mold and make conversation with a stranger.

Southside

On the Southside- you’ll find that this part of town is growing a lot faster than it knows how to handle. This section of the ultimate day drinking guide also covers the largest amount of land in San Antonio. So there’s a lot more options, a lot more possibility and a lot more time to enjoy just kicking back and sipping on some booze with your friends.

Southtown

Southtown would be the chill version of downtown. You’re still super close to everything but parking is usually free or at least significantly cheaper, the air is slightly more creative, and this all means you can stay here for hours on end talking about Kant or watch a Spurs game or whateva. You’re likely to encounter a lot more locals and regulars on this side of town because a lot of people live and drink in Southtown. BONUS: This side of town is home to First Friday and Second Saturday art walks so you can definitely take advantage of hanging out here before and during the art walk events.
