We didn’t start celebrating El día de los muertos until recently. You can say that I’m kind of lucky as I really didn’t lose anybody until I was older. With my Abuela things were hard and I didn’t know how to process it. So we really didn’t celebrate for her until after my Abuelo passed.
It became the only way that we could honor them exclusively. I mean we still celebrate them every year on their birthday by doing something they really liked to do or listening to music that they liked. Except now we added our celebration of the Day of the Dead. Every year I get out my box of El día de los muertos and start putting it together remembering all the great things we experienced in our lives together. One of the things that you had on the altar is candy or sweets. And my Abuelo was really into sweets.
We always include his favorite pan dulce and obviously some candy. So this year I thought it would be kind of interesting to spice things up and I decided to put together a calavera de dulces. I selected several bags of candy including HERSHEY’S, REESE’S, JOLLY RANCHERS, TWIZZLERS, YORK peppermint patties, and other goodies to create a Calavera all from my local HEB.
The first thing I did was sketch a skull and immediately realized that I really can’t draw. It’s always been a sad skill that I had because I’m not really artistic. So Hice la bendición And just decided to grab inspiration from the little sugar skulls that I had in my bedroom. But I have all the hope that you’re more of an artist then I am or you could probably print a skull from the Internet and trace it.
I’ve listed the recipe below so that way you can get to shopping and I am giving you the shopping list so that you’re prepared to create the cutest little Calavera of all time. Don’t forget the marigolds for your table set up and good luck.
