As Texans, we’re lucky to have nice weather year-round but when Labor Day weekend rolls around, it’s time to start saying good-bye to summer and usher in a new season of fall and back to school.

Whether you’re visiting the area or a longtime resident of Houston, check out these “must-see” events over the Labor Day weekend.

“OMG” It’s the All You Can Eat Seafood Feast

Also known as “The Biggest Labor Day Seafood Feast in Texas,” you can eat as much seafood as you want for under $100, prices vary depending on time of day and whether you choose boiled or fried. Come for the seafood and stay for the daiquiris and live DJ. Click here for more details.

Lit Jouvert Caribbean Paint Party

Located at the Viking Ranch, a limited amount of women can get in to this event for free when you RSVP. Take part in a paint powder party and hours of live music and Caribbean entertainers. BYOB and authentic Caribbean food will be available for sale. The party starts at 1 am on Sunday and goes until sunrise on Labor Day. Get all the details you need here.

Cool Bus Houston Labor Day Brewery Tour

You can’t beat a good brewery tour, particularly in Texas where there’s more than 275 craft breweries throughout the state. For $60, you can ride the bus and get a complimentary drink at each brewery you visit. You’ll start at Thistle Draftshop and visit Fire Ant Brewpub, Twisted Acre Brewery, Bearded Fox Brewing and Fortress BeerWorks. Learn more about the tour here.

If you’re heading out of town, or want to get away for the afternoon, check out the annual BrewMasters Craft Beer Festival at Moody Gardens in Galveston.

Safety Tips When Partying on Labor Day Weekend

Holiday weekends are a busy time of year for increased traffic, more patrolling, and an increase of accidents on Houston area roads. As always, you should never drive while distracted and keep your speed in check. Increased patrol means you’re more likely to get pulled over and ticketed for reckless driving.

Whether you’re planning on having a few drinks with friends at your favorite bar or are attending an all-day event that is centered around alcohol, don’t drink and drive.

If you can, designate a sober driver but if that’s not a reliable option consider your alternatives. Never accept a ride from a “sober” driver who has had a few drinks.

Rideshare and mass transportation are excellent and safe alternatives. If you’re in the area, check out the Free Sober Ride Program. The program offers free, safe and sober rides for qualifying individuals. 

Celebrate the last days of summer responsibly. Never drive drunk and reconsider getting behind the wheel when you’re “buzzed.”
